Trust

Trust is a well-explored interdisciplinary phenomenon (e.g., Coleman, 1994; Luhmann, 2000; Putman, 1995; Ripperger, 2007; Sunshine & Tyler, 2003).

For the current project, we adopt the distinction made by Castelfranchi and Falcone (2010), who in their comprehensive trust theory distinguish reason-based and implicit trust. Reason-based trust regards the notion that individuals rationally decide to trust another person as based on four aspects (Castelfranchi & Falcone, 2010): (1) whether the trustor has the same goals as the trustee, (2) whether the trustor depends on the trustee, (3) whether the trustee is perceived as competent, willing and harmless, and finally (4) whether there are external conditions that foster or hinder the achievement of the goal. Implicit trust is an automatic, unintentional and unconscious reaction to a stimulus (Castelfranchi & Falcone, 2010).
